NIWOP – consistent and long-term follow-up treatment

PD Dr. Kristina Bertl, PhD MSc MBA

The patient has been successfully pretreated (NIWOP – pretreatment = the right start!) ) and they have successfully completed implant treatment and been fitted with their prosthetic restoration – in short, the patient is now in phase 3 (‘Aftercare/follow-up phase’) of the NIWOP approach (NIWOP – No Implantology Without Periodontology). And this is the point at which the prophylaxis team should take on the patient again.

After the patient has been fitted with their prosthetic restoration, the next important steps are as follows:

  1. Oral hygiene instructions (tailored to the prosthetic restoration)
  2. Baseline examination – clinical and radiological
  3. Determination of the follow-up interval
  4. Remembering and complying with follow-up intervals
  5. Reduction and discussion of any risk factors
  6. Early identification of any pathologies (peri-implant mucositis, peri-implantitis)
  7. Initiation of appropriate treatment measures

You can find more information on all these points in previous reports:
